Based on a collection of autobiographical stories by Sally Benson, the script is little more than a series of domestic adventures in the lives of the Smith family of 1903 St. Louis. But it became a thing of wonder: a careful balance of sly but gentle humor, a collection of memorable performances, an understated score shorn of the usual movie-musical affectations, and at the center of it all Judy Garland, one of Hollywood's most memorable talents.
The transfer is excellent, capturing every nuance of the film's meticulously and beautifully designed sets in full Technicolor; the sound elements, remastered in Dolby 5.1, are equally fine and Garland's unique vocal skills are undimmed by time. All in all, it seems safe to say that not even the original 1944 theatrical release could surpass the quality of picture and sound offered here.
Although the bonus package would have better without the awful pilot for a failed television series based on the film, by and large it offers a superior collection. Previously available on VHS, the Roddy McDowell-narrated "making of" documentary is worth revisiting, as is the TCM-produced "Becoming Attractions." While a number of later documentaries surpass it, Hollywood: The Dream Factory" has never before been widely available and offers an inside glimpse of the famous 1972 MGM auction. The Martins' performance of "Skip to My Lou" a reconstruction of "Boys and Girls Like You and Me, and a collection of Vincent Minnelli movie trailers round out the offerings, all of them entertaining.
The notable audio commentary is led by film historian and Garland scholar John Fricke. I regret to say that I have several issues with Fricke, who seems to rely excessively on Vincent Minnelli's autobiography I REMEMBER IT WELL and who has a tendency to perpetuate certain myths about the film- chief among them the idea that Garland did "The Trolley Song" in a single take. (Garland prerecorded the song, the overall sequence involves at least seven unique camera set-ups, and although Garland performs most of the solo in a single take there is a change in camera set-up toward the end of her vocal.) Even so, Fricke offers considerable insight into the cast, crew, and production of MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS, and the commentary is laced with remarks (some of them archival) by the likes of Margaret O'Brien, Hugh Martin, and Irving Brecher; in spite of my occasional misgivings, it really is everything one could wish an audio commentary to be.
These aside, the bonus package contains one significant and unique prize: the short film "Bubbles." Long thought lost, Bubbles" is one of several shorts made in the early 1930s that include The Gumm Sisters, the youngest of whom would become better known as Judy Garland- a true rarity indeed.
Given the beauty of the transfer and the generally exceptional bonus package, it is difficult to imagine a better edition of this uniquely American classic. I strongly recommend it.

K. to music mogul Russell Simmons. A wide range of behavior—including flirtation and innuendo, a vulgar text or a crude joke, not to mention unpleasant sex—is being lumped together with real crimes of coercion and assault. Those called out for sexual impropriety, no matter how trivial, how unproven or how long ago, run the media gantlet, are declared guilty and their careers ruined. Backers of the liberal #MeToo and #TimesUp movements present this as a reckoning and cathartic response to sexual inequality. There are indeed pervasive crimes against women, but most are not being splashed across Twitter and the press in America today. In factories, the military and prisons, assault and rape are routinely covered up. Poor, black and immigrant women, as well as sex workers, have little recourse against sexual predation. Meanwhile, mums the word on urgent questions such as the assault on abortion rights, which have been whittled down to a formality that is inaccessible for the majority, rising costs of health care, and lack of access to childcare. The hype over “inappropriate” peccadilloes minimizes the terror of rape and trivializes sexual abuse, like that suffered by numerous female Olympic gymnasts for decades under their doctor Larry Nassar. Such hype also does nothing to address womens subordination and oppression, which are built into capitalist society. The #MeToo campaign is about sex, but it is just as much about power and politics. The Democratic Party is scrambling to cohere the so-called resistance to Donald J. Trump, who is accused of harassment by over a dozen women. To make the whole campaign go down easier, leading Democrats Nancy Pelosi and Kirsten Gillibrand had to wash the partys hands of its own sexual misconduct gaffe and dump Minnesota Senator Al Franken. It was a political calculation that cost them little, allowing them to posture as defenders of women, a lie the Democrats love to milk for their electoral fortunes. The fight against the presidents “pussy grabbing” is on the top of the Democratic Party agenda. The biggest demonstrations during last years inauguration focused on how Trumps piggish sexual follies made him “unfit” to rule the bloody American empire. The battle cry of those Womens Marches, dominated by white petty-bourgeois and bourgeois women in pink pussy hats, was over the fact that a qualified imperialist hawk and Wall Street-backed woman lost to an unabashed misogynist. This years Womens Marches continued to hail Hillary Clinton as their shepherdess with the slogan: “Power to the Polls. ” In good old American puritanical tradition, an anti-sex frenzy has been unleashed that serves to divert attention from the staggering brutalities carried out by the ruling class against working people: anti-immigrant roundups, the sanctioning of white-supremacists, attacks on unions, threats of unleashing the U. S. nuclear arsenal. In a cutting commentary, “The Great American Sex Panic of 2017”. 22 November) William Kaufman aptly calls this a “moral panic, ” which is “ironically, immoral at its core: repressive and diversionary, an identity-politics orgy of misdirected moral energies that breeds a chilling conformity of word and deed. ” He also notes a “bizarre inversion of values. ” As imperialist Commander-in-Chief, the male Clinton slaughtered hundreds of thousands abroad and tossed millions of women and children off welfare at home, but he is stigmatized for a blow job. Fear, Sexual Loathing and Racist Repression Founded by black activist Tarana Burke over a decade ago, MeToo went viral on Twitter post-Weinstein after it was taken up by actress Alyssa Milano. Shortly after, Time magazine declared the “silence breakers” Person of the Year. The Golden Globes were dominated by big money personalities preaching “Times Up, ” including a much-lauded speech by billionaire Oprah Winfrey, whose name has been bandied about as a potential Democratic presidential nominee. Shocking as it may be to some, not all women think alike. Fissures are now erupting in the #MeToo milieu. Early on, mainstream feminists like Nation writer Katha Pollitt expressed concern about a conservative backlash, especially as most of the outed harassers were Democrats. Privately, We Have Misgivings, ” Daphne Merkin, an avid Hillary supporter, worried that the career-ending condemnations and the automatic presumption of guilt could be an entrée to “torching people for the content of their fantasies. ” (Too late: people are thrown behind bars for possessing kiddie porn. Esteemed author Margaret Atwood was virtually tied to a stake for defending due process in her article, “Am I a Bad Feminist? ” More recently, a debate is raging over whether a bad date with comedian Aziz Ansari makes him a “sexual predator. ” An open letter signed by actress Catherine Deneuve and a group of 100 French intellectuals and professionals denouncing the wave of purges provoked a full-frontal feminist uproar. The letter objects to neo-Victorianism, which paints women as frail children: “Just like in the good old witch-hunt days, what we are once again witnessing here is puritanism in the name of a so-called greater good, claiming to promote the liberation and protection of women, only to enslave them to a status of eternal victim and reduce them to defenseless preys of male chauvinist demons. ” Within hours, supporters of #MeToo condemned the French signatories as “apologists for rape. ” No critic is granted immunity. Actor Matt Damon faced a ferocious reaction for his patently obvious statement that rape is distinct from a pat on the butt. If penalties are instant and draconian against anything deemed offensive, the net effect will be to police all behavior, especially the unconventional (anything kinkier than When Harry Met Sally. Defining inappropriate behavior is as subjective as defining “immoral” behavior. To the extent that codes of decency exist, they are prescribed by religion and regulated by the racist guardians of old-time virtue, the bourgeois rulers. On the university level, decades-long campaigns against a purported date rape epidemic have increased the in loco parentis powers of the campus administration to enforce “acceptable” conduct. Virtually any encounter, from a drunken hookup to a regrettable romance, can be classified as nonconsensual, leading to punitive consequences according to the campus initiatives implemented under the Obama administration. (For more, see the review of Laura Kipniss book Unwanted Advances in “Title IX Witchhunts, Anti-Sex Frenzy and Bourgeois Feminism, ” WV No. 1121, 3 November. Such is the degree of #MeToo mania that feminist author Laura Kipnis, who opposes anti-sex regimentation on the campuses, is now celebrating the fact that the “floodgates have opened” (New York Review of Books, 21 December. That innocent people will be “caught in the crossfire” is treated as simply irrelevant. Kipnis echoes the view that if a couple of unfortunate schmucks get chased by the mob, theyre collateral damage in the war against patriarchy. Mass vengeance is no doubt propelled by the fact that most of the falling stars are powerful, rich, white men…so, feminists say, good riddance. But in racist American society, those who will be “caught in the crossfire” have a greater dose of melanin and a lesser dose of prestige, i. e., black and brown people. To say that sex panics, which foment an inflated collective fear against the imaginary predator, have a tendency to legitimize punishment and rip up the presumption of innocence would be a vast understatement. This is potentially a dire threat to the rights of the entire populace. The cops and courts have regularly used sex to go after any perceived enemies. Comedian Dave Chappelle noted in his recent stand-up “The Bird Revelation” how the FBIs COINTELPRO spied on the sexual affairs of Martin Luther King to undermine his authority. The toll of the war on sexual “deviants” today has added to the earlier “war on crime” and ongoing “war on drugs”—code words for racist legal persecution that has increased the prison population by 500 percent to some 2. 2 million people today, nearly 40 percent of them black. A 2016 University at Albany study found that one in about every 120 black men is a registered sex offender (twice the rate of white men) a branded outcast for life. Lynchings brought on by rape accusations have a gruesome history in this country built on slave labor. The Tulsa, Oklahoma, race riot in 1921 and the Rosewood, Florida, massacre in 1923 were precipitated by lying rumors of black men assaulting white women. In 1955, young Emmett Till was murdered for an alleged wolf whistle. In his article, “A City on a Hill (or the Weinstein Effect)”. 1 December) playwright John Steppling comments on how race lurks behind the scenes: “There is something curious and unsettling in not seeing the dangers of a mass enjoyment of punishment. For that is what disturbs me the most. The pleasure of the mob. Lynchings had vendors and souvenirs. This is not the same, and yet there are similarities. And the manufacturing of the survivor identity (which originated with the Pre School cases) is handed out even if all that was survived was an unwelcome advance. What will be the effect down the road on sexual choices that may be seen as non-mainstream? The public narrative so far is linked with Hollywood. That should provide a moment of cautious hesitation for everyone. ” Steppling recalls the mob hysteria of the 1987-90 McMartin preschool trial—the longest trial in history—in which child witnesses told fantastical tales of animal sacrifices, orgies, satanic ritual abuse occurring in day-care centers. The crusade was part of the reactionary “family values” campaign of the Reagan years, which, among other things, sought to drive women back into the home. As satanic abuse cases swept the country, hundreds of people were wrongfully convicted, losing their freedom, families and reputations. Thirty years ago, the refrain was Believe the Children; today, that catchphrase is being applied to all women. Working-Class Servitude and Womens Oppression If the mob aids the government in deciding whats acceptable in the bedroom, the consequences will be bad for men and women. As Marxists, we oppose any and all efforts of the state to regulate the manifold consensual expressions of human sexuality. Consensual relations between individuals are purely their own concern, and no one has any business interfering (including when it comes to those in Hollywood who lead very exposed lives. We do not support rules dictating “affirmative consent, ” which decree that partners engaging in any sexual contact must get explicit verbal permission for each caress. The guiding principle in any sexual encounter should be effective consent, that is, nothing more than mutual agreement and understanding, regardless of age, gender or sexual preference. Of course, determining what is truly consensual in this viciously class-divided, racist, sexist, not to mention religious, society is complicated. The attitudes and institutions of the capitalist society in which we live sway interpersonal relationships, and there are often ambiguities. Relationships can also be exploitative and unequal, including marriage. Rape, however, is not on the spectrum of sex. It is a degrading, brutal and horrific act of violence. To treat any bad encounter as rape means to demand legal retribution, or else some form of vigilante justice. Sexual harassment and discrimination are rife in this anti-woman society, from quid pro quo come-ons to pay inequality. Under pressure to be pretty and pliant for their male superiors, women are subjected to humiliation and intimidation. But the Hollywood of well-heeled entertainers who seek to advance their careers is worlds apart from the situation for working-class women, who are desperate to make ends meet and far more subject to the whims of their bosses. The capitalist class, with the acquiescence of the union misleaders, has waged a one-sided war on organized labor in order to create a cheaper workforce, with part-time, non-union workers often filling what were once full-time, unionized jobs. The all-too-frequent indifference by union bureaucrats to harassment on the job gives yet another opening to liberal anti-union forces to encourage government policing of the unions in the name of defending women. The unions must champion womens rights, including free, 24-hour childcare, paid family leave and free abortion on demand as part of quality health care for all. To revitalize labor, the union movement needs a class-struggle leadership that would fight for organizing the unorganized, for equal pay for equal work and for union control of hiring and upgrading, which together would go a long way toward addressing the precarious economic position that makes working-class women vulnerable. The #MeToo and #TimesUp movements recently started paying lip service to the women at the bottom. Before the Golden Globes, an open letter signed by over a thousand in television, theater and film expressed solidarity with agricultural and factory workers, housekeepers, waitresses and domestic workers. In a patronizing display at the awards ceremony, swanky stars in black Gucci gowns brought activist guests to prove how “woke” they are. Given Hollywoods long-running romance with the Democratic Party, the political virtue of this sisterhood spectacle is obvious. Bourgeois women face sexual oppression but not class oppression. For feminists, the most important division in society is that of men against women, not capitalist exploiters against exploited workers. Feminism as an ideology reflects the concerns of professional and petty-bourgeois women who aim to break the glass ceiling and integrate themselves into the upper layers of the American capitalist power structure. The current era of “Lean In” feminism, which promotes success in the realm of corporate and political leadership, speaks directly to white, university-educated and upper-class women. And these are the same women the ruling class considers to be the “credible” victims of sexual assault. Other women—poor, black, single mothers and immigrants—more often than not find themselves vilified or subjected to greater abuse when they call on the state to protect them. Theyre also at risk for defending themselves. See the case of Marissa Alexander, a black woman from Florida who fired a warning shot near her abusive and estranged husband who was threatening her. Though no one was injured, she was sentenced in 2012 to 20 years in prison for aggravated assault. After almost six years of hell, Alexander was finally released from prison one year ago. Bourgeois Feminism and Anti-Sex Repression American feminism has always reflected the racist, conservative, puritanical values of this country. (The largest and most influential organization at the turn of the 20th century was the Womans Christian Temperance Union, which rallied against alcohol and lust. Decades ago, feminists made an unholy alliance with the religious right in declaring porn to be the cause of violence against women. In the course of this, they played a role supporting the government censorship drive spurring busts of X-rated video stores and attacks on erotic art. Looking to the state to regulate personal behavior and mete out punishment runs in the blood of feminism—particularly what is dubbed carceral feminism, which demands more policing, prosecution and imprisonment to curb violence against women. Last December, two New York City feminists petitioned the Metropolitan Museum of Art to either remove or “contextualize” a 1938 work by the Polish-French artist Balthus. The painting, Thérèse Dreaming, depicts a pensive young clothed model sitting with her underwear slightly exposed. The petition, which has gathered over 11, 000 additional signatures, refers to the current climate around “sexual assault” and accuses the Met of “supporting voyeurism and the objectification of children. ” By that reasoning, every advertisement for young girls toys or clothing should be banned. Might as well throw out masterpieces like Alice in Wonderland, which was inspired by the love that author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) had for a prepubescent girl. Feminist vehicles like Ms. magazine were big players in the witchhunting of day-school teachers as deranged pedophiles, and the subsequent morphing of child abuse into anything that smacks of sexuality involving a person under legal voting age. Not only does this play down the real abuse of children (which occurs mainly inside families) but it criminalizes young people having sex in general. Thus, the hounding of director Roman Polanski, who fled the country to escape criminal charges in 1978 for consensual sex with an experienced 13-year-old girl, has been revived in the wake of the Weinstein scandals. (Deneuve is hated not least for her defense of Polanski. There is also a renewed inquisition against Woody Allen over unfounded allegations of abuse of his adopted daughter Dylan Farrow, accusations spearheaded by his vengeful ex-partner, Mia Farrow. Allen has always denied Farrows claims, and no legal charges were ever brought against him. As Allen said in 1992, “In the end, the one thing I have been guilty of is falling in love with Mia Farrows adult daughter [Soon-Yi Previn] at the end of our years together. ” In the minds of maniacal accusers, he must be guilty—because he went on to marry Soon-Yi, who is 35 years younger than he. She was a young adult at the start of her relationship with Allen, and they have been married now since 1997. One might note that Mia Farrow was 21 and Frank Sinatra was 50 when they married. (See “Woody Allen Crucified on ‘Family Values, ” WV No. 558, 4 September 1992. The laws defining “sex crimes” today are fundamentally aimed at strengthening the repressive arm of the state and propping up the prison of the family. The struggle for the emancipation of women, including in the workplace, cannot be separated from the struggle for the emancipation of women from the family. The material basis for womens liberation can only be laid through the victory of workers revolution, which requires the forging of a Leninist vanguard party that will act as the tribune of all the oppressed, mobilizing to combat all social backwardness. As part of constructing an egalitarian socialist society, the family as an institution will be replaced by the socializing of childcare and housework, freeing women to play a full and equal role in social and political life. In a global communist future, anti-woman violence and bigotry, the reactionary constraints of family and religion will be barbaric memories of the past.
Note: I have never actually seen this movie myself, but I have seen enough clips of it and read enough summaries and reviews of it to get a pretty clear idea of what it is about and of why it is bad. I am aware that other people have already had a go at fixing it on this sub, but the way they (Sony, not the other people on this sub) totally wasted the premise has been bugging me for a while now, so I thought I'd give it a go. This is how I would have written the Emoji Movie Also apologies for this being too long. In the land of Textopolis, all emojis have to pretend that they feel only one emotion. Not just show it on their faces, but feel it. Like, at the beginning of the actual movie, they show the 😢 guy winning the lottery and crying, to show how he is unable to show any other emotion. Well, in my version, he is totally able to show other emotions, but he has to hide it. So he's not just crying while talking about how great it is to have won the lottery; he's crying and pretending that he's actually miserable to have won the lottery ( oh god, this is the worst day of my life! Its terrible! I've won. something along those lines. At some points in the early scenes of the movie, we see emojis struggle to keep up their act (maybe they keep the gag about the happy guy breaking his arm, but have him pause before he starts laughing again, to show that he's struggling not to start screaming instead. Why do they do this? Because, rather than setting themselves up in a huge complex machine every time Alex wants to text, the emojis are free to live their every day lives and, whenever they are wanted, a scanned comes down from the sky and beams them up, Star Trek style, to the message board (which is shown as being a big screen in the sky. They then reappear once the message has been posted or once they have been deleted from the message. Since they could be called up at any time, the emojis have to always be prepared. Gene isn't a meh. Partly because, as XKCD pointed out, that isn't a specific emoji. Also because 'neutral' seems like it would be the easiest face to maintain over a long period of time. No, Gene is one of the smiley family— rather than emojis being born to parents who are the same emojis as them (raising questions as to why there were ever two of those emojis in the first place) all the different categories of emoji are split up into 'families' also known as 'clans' so 😀😃😄😁😆😅😂🤣☺️😊😇🙂🙃😉😌 would all be related and treated like siblings or cousins or something. As the original movie addresses, some emojis are used more than others. What the movie doesn't consider is that there are degrees of how much you use an emoji. For instance, lots of people use the 🎄, but only at Christmas. So, what? Does he (or she, in my version approximately half the emojis are female, which saves us from a situation where one emoji is stuck being 'the girl' and so is forced to be a poorly written approximation of a 'strong female character' stay in the Loser's Lounge most of the year but come out for Christmas? No. Instead there is a sort of emoji class system, where the more often (on average) you and your category of emoji are used, the better you are treated. So the smileys are basically royalty. Gene is a 😃, meaning that he is used a fair bit, but he finds it very difficult to keep it up. As a demonstration of this, there is a scene where he slams his hand in a door and has to quickly rush into a bathroom so that he can react to the pain without anybody seeing him change his expression. His family are the only ones aware of his problem and so keep reminding him to "smile" or "look happy" whenever he looks like he's about to slip up. There's a general sense that they all look down on him a bit for being unable to just stick with one face. We also get the impression that this has been happening more and more recently. On the other side of the phone, meanwhile, we have Alex. I'm dropping the love story because it wasn't that great and, besides, I remember that when I was a kid I was really irritated by the way that love stories kept popping up in kids movies. (I was a little girl, so of course I had a lot of Disney princess movies. Because what eight year old doesn't want to watch teenagers and twenty-somethings struggling with their relationships. If you're going to set half your film on a phone, you might as well make it about something that happens on a phone— for example, cyber bullying. Alex is a pretty ordinary boy, but he has a secret. He's really into sewing (I'm going with sewing because it's a hobby that's typically seen as 'girly' and so one that a boy might easily get teased about. He expresses this side of himself through a small vlog— I'm talking like five subscribers— where he does sewing tutorials and shows off some of the cool stuff he's made. At school, however, he goes out of his way to fit in and not draw attention to himself. He's not that popular and we see him get mildly teased and picked on. While texting his friends or his parents, he often uses the smiley emojis when he's actually feeling upset, to make them think he's okay. We see the text messages, by the way, since it makes no sense to have a film about texting and not show text conversations. Texts are read out by their accompanying emojis, so that you're not stuck reading in the cinema (and to accommodate for younger kids who might not be able to keep up with the reading. The film starts one day when Gene is hanging out with his friends, who are still Hi-Five and Jailbreak (only Jailbreak is still Linda and Hi-Five is called Harry or something, because it makes no sense for some emojis to have human names and some to just be named after whatever they symbolise. They're friends mainly because they put up with Gene occasionally slipping up with his facial expressions and he and Harry put up with Linda's love of programming and messing with computers (which is forbidden because she's a Princess, and so has to do princess stuff. When she programs, her crown vanishes and she turns into a 👩💻. However they have to meet up in secret, because Linda especially is a very low ranking emoji— how often do you use the career emojis? — and so Gene isn't supposed to be friends with her (Harry is more acceptable, but he's not really supposed to be friends with him either. This is made all the harder by the fact that, because Gene's slip ups are happening more regularly, his family are now only letting him go out of one of them goes with him, to make sure he doesn't get into trouble. We learn that he has only just managed to give his current guard the slip so that he could see his friends and we see that, back at the smiley headquarters, the family is already organising a search for him. He is eventually found by 😁 (I'm naming her Sally. She's Alex's most used emoji and so head of the smiley clan— I'm picturing her as a bossy-but-protective, older sister type) and 😜 (head of the 'sillies' the next most used emojis. He's desperate to gain more power. I'm naming him Martin. Martin was following Sally, looking for any dirt he could use to put down the smiley family. When they find Gene and his friends, Sally drags Gene away and orders him to never see Linda and Harry again, in an attempt to avoid being seen as weak in front of Martin. However, it backfires when Gene becomes angry at this and changes his expression to 😡. Meanwhile, Alex is commenting on something at lunchtime at school and decides to use Gene, causing the scanner to come down and attempt to scan him. He's too worked up to change his face and so, instead, tries to outrun the scanner, causing him to run out of the alleyway where he was meeting his friends in secret and into a street full of people (who all react with horror and disgust, because showing any emotion but the one you are assigned is like being naked to them. Meanwhile the scanner is still chasing him and Sally ends up having to jump up and grab hold of it, getting the rest of the smiley family to help her pull it away from Gene. Alex keeps pressing the 😃 and becomes frustrated that it isn't working. A kid sitting nearby offers to help and, without asking, takes the phone off Alex and starts messing with it. He ends up accidentally switching on Youtube (or some parody) instead of settings and seeing Alex's latest video. He shows it to some of the other kids and they all start laughing and teasing Alex about liking 'girly' stuff. Alex snatches the phone back and leaves. Back in the phone, the smileys are trying to do damage control for Gene, while Martin is using it as an opportunity to hurt the smileys. He convinces the people of Textopolis that, if emojis start changing their faces whenever, it could lead to a collapse of society and recommends that they reprogram Gene— a process that would render him unable to change his expression, but have the side effect of basically lobotomising him. Luckily, he, Harry, Linda and Sally are able to escape because Linda's knowledge of computers means that she is able to get them out of the texting app. The doorway she creates closes behind them, preventing Martin or any of the others from getting through, but this also triggers the release of the robots from the original movie who, instead of being controlled by an emoji, are just an automated part of the phone, designed to keep the elements of different apps from crossing over. If they catch them, they'll return them to their app. The rest of the movie then switches between three storylines. The main plot is about Gene, Sally, Linda and Harry all moving between parodies of various apps, trying to keep away from the robots and somehow figure out a non-lobotomising way to keep Gene's face from switching. Linda and Sally argue about this a lot, since Sally still believes that Gene needs to be fixed, while Linda thinks that he's fine and that the problem is society's refusal to accept him. Harry is basically just the comic relief, but tends to fall more on Linda's side of the argument (though, being a high ranking emoji, he sympathises with Sally. Sally keeps up her 'happy' attitude with some difficulty as things get tougher and tougher, until Alex deletes an app that they are travelling through (a social media app that people were bullying him on) and they all nearly die. After that she breaks down and finally changes her face, admitting that she doesn't always feel happy and that it can be really hard for her to keep up. Alex, meanwhile, is being badly cyber bullied by the assholes in his class, who are posting mean comments on his videos and all over social media. We learn about this both through his eyes and through the eyes of the main emoji characters, who witness some of the bullying when they travel through the Youtube and Facebook apps (or some parodies of them. He continues to pretend to his parents that everything is fine whenever they ask him how his day was, but his social life is basically destroyed and he starts deleting his social media apps because people keep messaging him. It's made clear that he's becoming depressed. He throws away all his sewing stuff. His actions affect the journey of the main characters at some points during the film. For example, him accessing an app activates it, which can make it harder for the robots to cross in their hunt for the emojis. This cyber bullying thing also serves to add more tension, as the characters become worried that, if it doesn't stop, Alex will stop using his phone in order to get away from it. When the phone is shut down, it is essentially 'night time' for the emojis— so if Alex doesn't turn it on again then they'll be stuck in an endless night. Occasionally the film also goes back to the third plotline, which focuses on what's happening in Textopolis, now that Martin has taken over. Basically, he's on his way to becoming a dictator, but is rebelled against by a small but quickly increasing resistance force of Gene-sympathisers, who have all started changing their faces so as to identify each other. In the end, the gang are cornered by the robots in the Youtube app when Alex opens it while walking home from school to see how people have commented on his videos. There are loads more comments than before and pretty much all of them are negative and insulting to Alex, causing him to delete the app. Just before they are deleted, the emojis are caught by the robots and transported back to the text app, where they are met by Martin and the emojis on his side (including several members of the silly clan. They are captured and Martin tells one of the computer people emojis to reprogram Gene. The resistance starts fighting back, but isn't able to get close enough to rescue him. Meanwhile, Alex is really upset about having to delete the Youtube app, since it was the one place he felt he could really be himself. He stops to try and get his face together before going home and gets a text from his Mum, asking where he is and if he's alright. He texts her back to say he's fine and selects Gene. The scanner comes down and beams Gene away just before he can be reprogrammed. Alex isn't really concentrating on what he's doing and so presses send before he notices that Gene's face is still in the 😨 face, from when he was about to be reprogrammed. This is weird enough to make Alex's Mum to ask him if he's definitely sure he's okay, which is what finally gets Alex to open up about being bullied. While he's explaining, Gene is sent back down to Textopolis, where everybody was watching just what happened (remember, all texts appear on a screen in the sky. Alex's Mum texts him back, in full view of all the emojis, telling him that she'll call the school and stop the bullying. The other emojis realise that Gene has saved Alex from the bullies and so saved them from a world where Alex stopped using his phone. Martin's remaining allies turn away from him and release Gene. When Martin tries to get them to join him again, by pointing out that Gene's still a freak, Linda steps up and reveals her own desire to be a hacker. Sally then says that she sometimes feels other emotions besides happiness. Suddenly all the emojis start revealing various talents and emotions that they'd been keeping hidden. Martin then, finally, reveals that he's actually fed up with being a 😜 and has secretly always wanted to be able to wear a crown and dress up like the prince and princess emojis. The movie ends with a new vlog from Alex, saying that he's no longer getting bullied, he's got some new sewing supplies and that, actually, once the bullying died down some other kids with unusual or unconventional hobbies reached out to him. So now he has some new friends. We then go down to Textopolis, where the programmer emojis, helped by Linda and a few other emojis who wanted a go, have been working to hack the scanning machine and reprogram it. From now on, it always announces who its going to scan before it comes down, giving them time to prepare. This removes the need for emojis to be constantly acting happy or sad, or whatever, giving them the freedom to express themselves however they want (which works pretty well with the tagline of the movie. Gene is the first one to be scanned with the new machine, which beams him up above Textopolis (giving us a chance to zoom out and see how much happier everybody looks) to be part of a message that reads "Gtg, bye! 😃" and the credits roll.

He also makes rifts sometimes if he's attacking, or summoning an object he wants, or something like that. When he's done using a rift, he closes it. However, Rifter will have to open many rifts along his journey. He opens so much rifts, that the space time continuum becomes unstable, resulting in random rifts opening and closing throughout the multiverse. Rifter isn't aware on how to make space time less unstable, so as his journey goes on, more and more random rifts will appear. The random rifts will occur so often, that is it guranteed you will get sucked into one and experience at least 90% of the universes. Rifter will start in his own universe. The universe he goes to first will be Real Life. After that, he'll do the rest in a random order. Events: Rifter finds a magical rock (from his universe) that grants him the power to detect objects he needs Rifter steals the Earth's entire water supply, because water is the object from Real Life that he needs The Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device (Portal) can now work on any flat surface that isn't made out of Lego bricks. Lord Vortech (Lego Dimensions) is freed from his prison via a random rift from Rifter. After this movie came out i was going through a difficult time. i watched this movie on video over and over and was hystercally laughing through the whole thing 😁 btw. i am living the epic unconventional love story now and have been for the past 15 years in minutes and hours at a figure it has some laughs 😁.
